Cornell Theory Center's SciFair Invited to Participate in Innovate 2007

May 4, 2007 -- Ithaca, NY

The Cornell Theory Center's (CTC) outreach program, SciFair, has been invited to participate in the Virginia Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology's Innovate 2007 conference. The conference will take place May 8, 2007 in Richmond and is Virginia's first exposition devoted to new and emerging technologies for education. CTC's highly successful SciFair science communication program uses the medium of online virtual worlds to attract and retain middle school students in education.

Elmira City School District & Holy Family Intermediate School Win NYS Learning Technology Grant in Support of the Cornell Theory Center’s Cyber Civilizations Project

April 19, 2007 -- Ithaca, NY

The Elmira City School District and the Holy Family Intermediate School have jointly been awarded a $50,000 New York State Learning Technology Grant from the New York State Education Department to support the implementation of the Cornell Theory Center’s (CTC) SciCentr Cyber Civilizations (CyberCiv) Project. The money will be used to support integration of interactive, virtual world technology into the schools’ middle school English language arts/social studies curricula.

Cornell University Awarded NSF Broadening Participation in Computing Grant

December 14, 2006 -- Ithaca, NY

Cornell University has been awarded nearly $600,000 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to lead a Demonstration Project for NSF's Broadening Participation in Computing program (BPC). The project, titled Worlds for Information Technology and Science (WITS), will explore an innovative approach to attracting women and underrepresented minorities to computing fields. The project will be led by Dr. David Gries, associate dean for undergraduate programs in Engineering and professor of Computer Science, and Margaret Corbit, director of SciCentr.org and the Cornell Theory Center's (CTC) outreach manager. Gries and Corbit are leaders in the development of undergraduate education in computer science and the use of new media for outreach education, respectively.

SciFair Showcased at 9th International PCST Conference

May 18, 2006 -- Ithaca, NY

Margaret Corbit, Cornell Theory Center's (CTC) SciFair Program Director, is speaking at the 9th International Conference on Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST), May 17-20, 2006. The conference is the first of its kind in Asia and is hosted by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology and the Korea Science Foundation.

MorrowSound™ Cube to be Displayed in Duffield

March 10, 2006 -- Ithaca, NY

On March 30, members of the Cornell community are invited to experience a 10-foot sound cube in the Kenneth Goldman Lounge of the Duffield Atrium. The cube will be open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with additional limited availability from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. In the afternoon, the New York City-based sound artist and designer, Charlie Morrow, will demonstrate the cube for students in "Playing with Space and Time." Morrow is a visiting lecturer for this new course funded through a Faculty Innovation in Teaching award, a Provost initiative.

New Course Combines Creativity and Technology

Cornell's course roster for the Spring 2006 will include "Special Topics in Art Studio: Playing with Space and Time," a new course that will give students the chance to try their hands with a variety of digital media as tools for exploring and expressing their ideas about space and time.

Cornell Theory Center to Demonstrate at Annual Conference for Supercomputing

The Cornell Theory Center (CTC) is demonstrating its latest research and development, software, and technologies at SC05, held at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, from November 12-18. In addition, four members of CTC's staff were invited to present "Introduction to .NET and Web Services" as a tutorial at this year's conference.

Cornell Theory Center Infuses College Discovery Program with Serious Games and Fun Math

July 21, 2005 -- Ithaca, NY

Members of the Cornell Theory Center’s (CTC) education team are introducing 12 local fifth-grade students (six from Beverly J. Martin and six from Enfield Elementary School) to a world where games are serious and math, science, and technology are fun. The week-long program includes an Open House at which students will showcase their projects. This program is part of CTC's SciCentr/SciFair outreach activities.

Local Student Completes Internship at Cornell Theory Center

Christine Cretser, of Trumansburg, N.Y., the daughter of Audrey and David Cretser, has spent portions of the last two months at the Cornell Theory Center (CTC) completing an internship through which she learned about the newest movement in education: serious games. Cretser is a senior at Trumansburg High School.

Patrik Svennson to Discuss Virtual Worlds in Academia

February 28, 2005 -- Ithaca, NY

The Cornell Theory Center will host Patrik Svennson, of Umeå University in Sweden, on Monday, February 28, 2005. The presentation, "From Text to First Person Shooters: Iconic and Symbolic Representation in Virtual Environments," will begin at 4:30 p.m. in 655 Rhodes Hall. The event is free and open to members of the Cornell community.
