Online Student Mentor Coordinator

Description: This job is ideal for graduate students looking for
fulfilling part-time jobs, especially those with an interest in education, human-computer
interaction, social computing, new media, or institutional change. One or two students
will coordinate a team of student online mentors who interact with students and
teacher through the medium of online multi-user virtual worlds. See

more information. Coordinator and mentor shifts are synchronized with educational
programs at remote sites (primarily middle schools in NY State). Coordinators will
help train college-age mentors and coordinate the mentors during the semester. Mentor
activities are based on the
SciFair Model and the
CyberCiv 6th grade curriculum and include serving as inworld helpdesk
staff during school hours for CyberCiv. Coordinators will track mentors, participate
in active mentoring or help desk sessions as appropriate, act as liaison with program
staff, help communicate day to day with program sites, and be encouraged to contribute
to program development. Ideal candidates will have experience working with teens
(e.g., coaching, mentoring, camp counseling) and computing in a Windows environment.
Combined team expertise will include interest and aptitude for social computing
and Internet technologies, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and creativity.

Students eligible for Federal Work Study are encouraged to apply; Federal Work Study
is not required.
Special Requirements: Applicants must be familiar with Windows
computing, be available for full three-four hour morning or afternoon shifts (8
am-noon/noon-4 pm) Monday through Thursday and be willing to undergo a background
check. Commitment to the teens and mentors and good communication skills are essential.
Preference will be given to candidates are available daily for one shift or two
or more days/week for both shifts.
Work Schedule: Hours between 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. M-F
