CUni Network Setup

There are two possible firewall configurations that will work. The requirements are similar, but not exactly the same for connecting to different servers via different versions of the browser (it might be worthwhile for them to eventually use the AWEDU version).

Here are your options. Option A is easier, but Option B will generally give slightly better performance, and is more reliable because fewer separate services are required. Contact the tech coordinator if you have any other questions.

Required For Both

  • Port 80 open to all of the websites we use or preferably everywhere. The main web sites we use are hosted at these IP addresses: 132.236.231.197, 132.236.231.198, and 64.94.241.240. The corresponding domain names are several subdomains of scicentr.org including www.scicentr.org and host.scicentr.org, and www.activeworlds.com. This means content filters are undesirable.
  • Port 53 outgoing (DNS).

Option A

  • Port 443 (SSL) to 64.94.241.219 (tunnel.activeworlds.com)
  • Use Autoconfigure when choosing the connection type.

Option B

  • Port 5671 to 132.236.231.197 (universe server, scicentr3.tc.cornell.edu / cuni.scicentr.org).
  • Port 7778 to 132.236.231.197 (world server, cuni.scicentr.org).
  • Configure browser to connect via LAN.

Upgrade notes

The Universe and World server IP address changed May 30, 2008. It and the ports used had also changed since the 2006-7 academic year.

Test

After this is done, double-check the to make sure everything works. You should be provided with (or ask for) an account to login and test. Log in, enter a few worlds, and make sure you see web content in the web window and 3D graphics content in the center window, and no error messages in the chat window that indicate you are offline or disconnected.
