Overview
In order to best serve our
community, we upgraded to a new version of the Active Worlds server
for CUni (formerly CTCUni) during summer 2007. The new version is
4.1.
The user experience has not changed substantially, though there are
many new features.
The universe is now running on new hardware, and all user information and world content has been
moved to the new system (except as noted below). Users are required to upgrade to the new CUni browser, which was released
on August 24, 2007. The 3.6 version is no longer supported.
To upgrade, simply uninstall any prior versions, and download and install the new one,
which is available from the Software page.
User Account and Content Changes
Most users of the 3.6 universe can use the same login information they used up to
May 29, 2007 (any username or password changes after that point do not apply). Users
of the 4.1 beta universes (mostly Art 372 students from the last two years) have new
citizen numbers, and might also have different names and passwords.
If your login information no longer works in the new version, please
ask for help.
Most world content should be the same as in the prior universe version. The only
intentional changes are owners of objects in worlds that came from other universes or
the beta version of the 4.1 universe (which affects all Art 372 worlds from the last
two years, plus the worlds: SciCentr, SciFair, and Tomato).
A few worlds were not moved to the new universe. These include worlds
used for testing, utility development, and worlds that were never used for
various reasons. Note that many worlds were imported but are currently kept
offline until needed, so if you notice a world missing from the world list,
it has not necessarily been deleted.
Information for Lab Admins at Program Sites
The version upgrade has implications for software installation and the network
configuration requirements for connecting to our servers.
The installation process is the same as earlier versions, except that you should
uninstall the earlier version first. Generally speaking, any local customizations
you have distributed after installation work the same as before, and can simply
be repeated.
The required network configuration is similar to previous versions, but the
server IP address and required port numbers are different.
